Mother Schmuckers, Harpo Guit and Lenny Guit’s wild new comedy that recently wrapped up a celebrated festival run, is set to soon arrive in theaters and on digital and Blu-ray from Dark Star Pictures. Written and directed by the Guits, the Belgian film first premiered at Sundance 2021 and is now set for its wider release. It will first hit movie theaters on March 4, but ahead of its theatrical premiere, we can exclusively debut the all-new official trailer for Mother Schmuckers. You can watch the video below.
Mother Schmuckers is a movie described as told “in the tradition of classic John Waters, and featuring acclaimed actor Mathieu Amalric in an iconic turn.” It stars Maxi Delmelle, Harpo Guit, Claire Bodson, Fresco, and Mathieu Amalric. The comedy follows two brothers, Issachar and Zabulon, who are “supremely stupid and never bored, as madness is part of their daily lives. When they lose their mother’s beloved dog, they have 24 hours to find it – or she will kick them out.”
“We are very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very happy,” Lenny and Harpo Guit said when Dark Star Pictures picked up Mother Schmuckers, per THR. The company also acquired the bizarre feature Bloody Oranges with plans to give that film a similar release.
“Both of these films have an absurdist, genre leaning DNA that represents the exact kind of features we strive to release,” Dark Star president Michael Repsch noted. “They are each so incredibly unique in their voice, yet familiar and oddly relatable. We know that audiences will not soon forget either of these pieces of cinema, and we had to have them in the Dark Star family.”
Mother Schmuckers Is Comedy At Its Grossest
As you can probably tell from the trailer, Mother Schmuckers is not the type of comedy that will appeal to everyone. The Belgian film seems to fully embrace gross-out humor in ways that would impress the Jackass Forever cast, and the characters don’t seem to be much more intelligent than the titular delinquents on Beavis and Butt-Head. But for as wildly offensive as the comedy might be for some viewers, there are others, including some top critics at Rotten Tomatoes, that couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity from start to finish.
“A chaotically silly piece of insanity that had me laughing myself stupid for 70 minutes straight,” Phindie’s Dan Scully says.
“The Guits masterfully keep upping the black comedy ante, fearless in their goal to offend everyone in this hilarious instant cult classic,” adds Edge Media Network’s Frank J. Avella.
And Shaun Munro of Flickering Myth puts it, “You won’t find good taste here, but a feverishly propulsive energy and snappy runtime ensure Mother Schmuckers has the potential to become a shamelessly demented cult fave.
One thing that’s for sure is that this movie won’t be quite like anything else you’ve seen before. Mother Schmuckers is slated to hit theaters on March 4 followed by a digital release on March 15. A Blu-ray release will follow in April.
