There have been many great movies about movies, as the act of filmmaking can sometimes be more dramatic and entertaining than the actual films themselves (see the documentary Lost Soul: The Doomed Journey of Richard Stanley’s Island of Dr. Moreau, for example). From Truffaut’s Day for Night to Fellini’s 8½, films about films have resulted in some true masterpieces.

The upcoming comedy Going Nowhere, which premieres via VOD on April 25th, hopes to follow that trend, perhaps more in the vein of Christopher Guest’s great mockumentary, For Your Consideration, or David Mamet’s satire, State and Main, than Fellini or Truffaut. It’s an indie comedy directed by and starring Izzy Shill alongside, Diana Irvine, Geoff Marslett, Devon Wycoff, Felipe Dieppa, Matt Ransdell Jr., Stefan Singh, Alec Richker, Andy Blieden and Zachary Webber. Check out the exclusive trailer below:

The synopsis of Going Nowhere reads as follows:

Izzy’s making a movie. ‘The Seed’, a feminist slash environmentalist magnum opus about a plant that saves the world, starts shooting in Kentucky. Incompetence, paranoia, and sexual frustration drive the crew to the brink of mutiny. Are they going to make it? Or are they all Going Nowhere?

As Film Independent notes, “Izzy Shill is a writer, director and actor living in Los Angeles. She is a dual citizen with the UK. She starred in the short film, The Rat (Sundance 2019) and recently made her directorial debut with Face to Face Time, a short form sex comedy (SXSW 2020, Amazon).”

Readers may have noticed the metafictional aspect of Izzy Shill making a movie about a woman named Izzy making a movie. It’s a clever, self-referential touch that acknowledges the difficulties (and occasional absurdities) of trying to make an independent film, especially over the past few years in the wake of COVID-19. There’s a somewhat autobiographical element to the movie which makes it feel almost voyeuristic.

Millennials Are Going Nowhere on April 25th

Despite its more meta leanings, Going Nowhere is a very accessible film, one that’s somewhat light and buoyant. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s unperceptive about the generation it depicts. The movie is mostly focused on Millennials and the stereotypes of their generation, akin to how Sunset Boulevard, another movie about filmmaking, commented upon the Lost Generation and its differences with Boomers and the so-called Greatest Generation.

As the line between independent movies and mainstream studio films blur (with more smaller studios bought by more massive studios), it’s increasingly rare to find a genuinely independent film with crossover appeal. Fortunately, Film Independent has been working with burgeoning talent for years now, and has helped an abundance of great independent movies get the audience they deserve.

Mythologie Pictures and The Group Entertainment, in association with Lunacy, and will be distributed by Gravitas Ventures through VOD on April 25th.
