Samsung released two foldable smartphones in July, the Galaxy Z Fold 6 and Galaxy Z Flip 6. If you thought the company was done with foldable phone releases in 2024, well, that’s not the case. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is coming this year, and we bring you an exclusive first look at the device’s design.
Before we get down to it, just so you’re up to speed, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is the expected thinner variant of the Galaxy Z Fold 6. It’s also known as the ‘Galaxy Z Fold 6 Slim’ and ‘Galaxy Z Fold 6 Ultra’.
Here’s your first look at Samsung’s upcoming foldable, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition
With that being said, if you check out the image below, you’ll get to see the device itself. Yes, it does resemble the Galaxy Z Fold 6, but those of you with a keen eye will immediately notice it’s thinner.
The phone still has a flat frame, with slightly rounded corners, for comfort’s sake. It still has a camera island with three cameras on the back, and those cameras are even in the same spot.
The camera island looks a bit different
The thing is, that camera island does have a slightly different shape, it’s not as round as the one on the Galaxy Z Fold 6. It also does seem to be a bit thicker too.
You’ll also notice that the phone’s cover display has a centered display camera hole at the top. That display is flat, as is the phone’s back. The hinge is hidden when the phone is unfolded, of course.
The phone’s backplate has a brushed metal look
The back side of this particular model has a brushed metal look. We’re not 100% sure, but chances are this is glass with a different finish below it. At least it looks like that, but we’ll have to wait and see. We’re not sure if this will be the only color variant or not.
The power/lock button will double as a fingerprint scanner, and it’s located on the right-hand side of the phone. The volume up and down buttons sit above that power key, as expected.
The Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition will be 10.6mm thick when folded
What else do we know about this device? Well, we do know that it will be 10.6mm thick when folded, and 4.9mm thick when unfolded, thanks to Evan Blass. The phone will include a 200-megapixel main camera on the back, and we also do have some information on its displays.
The main display on the device will measure 8 inches, while the cover panel will be 6.5 inches in diagonal. So, both displays will be a bit larger than the ones on the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6.
Its availability could be quite limited
Another detail worth noting is that the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition is not expected to have a wide launch. It is rumored to be available in China and South Korea only. Nothing is official yet, so we’ll just have to wait and see.
The phone’s launch date is still a mystery, but it is expected to become official at some point this year.
