A horrifying truth lays beneath the veneer of an inherited painting in this exclusive, bone-chilling trailer for the upcoming Thai horror movie, Cracked. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, but in Cracked, an inherited painting may be worth a thousand screams. Check out our exclusive trailer for Cracked below…
Directed by Surapong Ploensang in their feature film debut, Cracked follows Ruja (played by actress and model Chayanit Chansangavej) who returns to Thailand from New York with her young daughter Rachel to settle her late father’s estate. Included in her inheritance are two mysterious portraits of a bewitching woman that she is told are worth a fortune, if only they weren’t damaged.
Desperate to sell the paintings, Ruja hires Tim (K-pop star Nichkhun), an art restorer, to prepare the canvases for sale. But the cracks in the paint have begun to reveal long-hidden secrets, and as strange phenomena begin to emerge around them, Ruja and Rachel quickly realize their lives are in grave danger.
Written by Ploensang alongside Eakasit Thairaat, Onusa Donsawai, and Pun Homchuen, Cracked also stars Byron Bishop (Kate, Only God Forgives), Nichkhun (Big Hero 6: The Series), and Nutthatcha Padovan (Innocent Lies).
Cracked is scheduled to premiere on VOD and DVD on May 26, 2023, courtesy of Film Movement.
Thai Horror Has Seen a Surge in Popularity in Recent Years
This year has been great for horror movie fans so far, with the likes of M3GAN, the possession thriller Attachment, director Brandon Cronenberg’s surreal Infinity Pool, the isolated terror of M Night. Shyamalan’s Knock at the Cabin, the experimental horror flick Skinamarink, and slasher sequel Scream VI all having already terrified audiences worldwide. Long-awaited supernatural horror follow-up Evil Dead Rise recently landed in theaters to much acclaim, with the rest of the year still having plenty of scares on offer including Stephen King’s The Boogeyman on June 2; Insidious: The Red Door on July 7; The Last Voyage of the Demeter on August 11; and the horror comedy The Blackening, which is scheduled to be released on June 16.
And that’s just what’s on offer on this side of the world. Over the last decade or so, the popularity of Thai horror has increased massively, with western audiences discovering the terrifying delights of such horror flicks as The Lake, Shutter, Alone, The Promise, The Covenant, Ghost Lab, and more.
The Art of the Devil series has also proven to be popular, as have more recent releases such as 2020s supernatural slasher The Maid and 2019’s Inhuman Kiss, which follows a mysterious female spirit who lives a normal life by day but detaches her head to seek out flesh and blood at night. A sequel, Inhuman Kiss: The Last Breath, was released in Thailand last month. Many of these movies are now available to stream on one of the many platforms.
But, if all that doesn’t satisfy your thirst for terror, there are several horror outings from Thailand on the horizon including Home for Rent which, inspired by true events, tells the story of a family who find themselves at the whim of a dark cult; and the series Zomvivor, which follows a group of students who take refuge in their school after an unknown virus spreads throughout the city, transforming the population into zombies.
