Following the 1955 lynching, Mobley began fighting for justice after his murder. Whoopi Goldberg Says Till is a Mother’s Story

Whoopi Goldberg is passionate about Till and Emmett’s relationship with his mother, Mamie. That relationship is what will be at the heart of the film and explored in depth following the tragedy that occurred in Mississippi. During an interview with Good Morning America, Goldberg talked about the difficulty of making the film and why she’s so passionate about the project.

“This is a story that people think they know, and they know it because they’ve heard half tales of what went on and how this all went down. But people forget these are two people, a mother and a son, and in the middle of all of this nation could throw at two people, they threw. And Mamie threw it back, and said, we’re not going to close the casket. I want them to see what they did to my son. It’s a mother’s story.

Danielle Deadwyler, who plays Mamie Till-Mobley, said it meant everything to bring the civil rights activists’ legacy to life.

“It’s everything to embody the experience of this kind of legacy that I’ve known all my life. It’s what you learn about– the terror that black people have had to experience in this country. I yielded myself, and I understood this to be a great service. It’s beyond an honor.”

Everyone associated with Till is not only taking the subject matter seriously but respecting every aspect of the young boy and mother’s lives and legacy. The upcoming biopic will surely bring much-needed attention to the 1955 tragedy and remind audiences of the impact Mamie Till-Mobley had on American history.
