Ea today has confirmed that Apex Legends Mobile development is being cancelled, and that it will sunset the game in the near future. As a property, Apex Legends has been wildly successful and is one of the most popular battle royale games on console and PC. Partly because the game is free-to-play so the barrier of entry is low. Which means more people are apt to give it a try. But also because the game is just, really good.

So when EA announced some few years ago that it would be releasing a mobile adaption of the game, it seemed like a really good idea. After all, Activision has been enjoying huge success with Call of Duty: Mobile for a few years. Why should it be the only major shooter franchise that breaks into the mobile space and does well?

The unfortunate thing for Apex Legends Mobile and why it was cancelled, is that it hasn’t done well. At least not in the long run. EA states that the game had a strong start. But that the “ongoing experience was not going to meet the expectations of our players.”

Apex Legends Mobile was cancelled because quality fell short

In a separate post from the game’s developer Respawn Entertainment, the studio attributes the decision to a few major key points.

First and foremost, the game was no longer meeting standards for quality. Respawn says that as a studio, it’s still “proud of the game that we developed.” But, the content pipeline was beginning to fall short of its bar for quality. As well as the quantity and cadence that are synonymous with the PC and console versions of the game.

What does this mean for the game as it currently stands? Well it’s not shutting down right away. Respawn says it will stay active for the next 90 days. After which it will sunset the game and it will no longer be playable. It is however disabling any possibility to make in-game purchases starting today, January 31. It’s also no longer available to install from web stores. The game will officially go offline on May 1.

EA says it will also be cancelling development of its mobile adaption of Battlefield. Instead, it will focus on Battlefield 2042 and its vision for the future of the Battlefield franchise.
