Don’t worry, OnePlus 13 series will get 4 OS updates as promised

OnePlus launched its latest flagship offering, called the OnePlus 13, in its home market of China in October last year. The company released the handset in the US in January alongside the OnePlus 13R variant with years of OS update promise. However, recently, some reports surfaced online suggesting that OnePlus considers the out-of-the-box software as one of the OS updates for the phone. But it doesn’t seem to be the case since OnePlus has clarified that the 13 series will indeed get 4 OS updates, as promised by the brand earlier.

Here’s the official OS update policy of the OnePlus 13 series

OnePlus has released an official statement clearing up the confusion regarding the OS update policy for the OnePlus 13 series. The company has confirmed that it will release 4 OS updates for both the OnePlus 13 and 13R smartphone models. That means that these phones will get the upcoming Android 16, 17, 18, and 19 version updates. OnePlus launched both the smartphones with Android 15 out of the box.

The launch OS version doesn’t count as an update

OnePlus has clarified that the initial Android 15 version that comes pre-installed on the OnePlus 13 series at launch doesn’t count as the first update. In addition to the four operating system updates, OnePlus will release security updates for the 13 series phones for six years.

The company believes that four OS updates is the optimal amount for its smartphones. It’s worth mentioning that the brand did increase the Android security patch window from 5 years to 6, though.

OnePlus has also clarified the update policy for the Watch 3

It’s worth mentioning that OnePlus has also cleared the confusion regarding the OS update policy for its smartwatches. Soon after the launch of the OnePlus Watch 3, some reports suggested that the wearable would only get 2 years of OS updates. However, the company has clarified that it will deliver 3 years of major Wear OS and security updates for the Watch 3. The wearable will get the Wear OS 6 update in 2026 and Wear OS 7 by 2027.

As for the OnePlus Watch 2, the smartwatch currently boots WearOS 4 version. It will get the Wear OS 5 and Wear OS 6 updates, apart from 3 years of quarterly security updates from 2024 until 2026.
