After appearing as post-credit scene in Spider-Man: No Way Home, the spectacular trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has arrived.
When Spider-Man: No Way Home arrived in cinemas, there were whispers that the post-credit scene could well be a trailer for Doctor Strange in The Multiverse of Madness, Marvel’s next big movie arriving in May 2022. While this was questionable, as Marvel has only previously gone down a trailer-style route way back in the beginning when Captain America ended with a teaser for The Avengers, it turned out to be true. Now, with Spider-Man having been in some cinemas a week, the trailer for Doctor Strange’s next adventure has arrived online. Check it out below and prepare yourself for multiversal fallout.
Beginning with soundbites from Spider-Man: No Way Home, in which we hear Wong warning Strange not to cast the spell that would help Peter Parker escape his identity issues, and Strange acknowledging that “the multiverse is something we know very little about,” the trailer throws us straight into the matters that the Doctor must deal with following his seemingly reckless decision to aid Parker. We see Strange, played as always by Benedict Cumberbatch, pay a visit to Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and enlist her to help him. We also get our first look at the return of Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer and America Chavez making her live-action debut portrayed by Xochitl Gomez. However, after many flashing images of one of the expected villains, fights, and more, we hear Ejiofor’s Mondo tell Strange that the biggest threat to the universe is himself as the Doctor comes face to face with a dark version of himself.
Marvel is well known now for their intricate connections between their entire MCU franchise, with even seemingly unconnected projects like this year’s What If…? series now clearly being a precursor to the revelations to come in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, considering both of them feature a “dark” variant of Doctor Strange. But the question is, what is the movie actually going to be about? What is the plotline? Of course, we have no real idea, and that is probably how it going to stay until the movie makes its debut in cinemas next year.
Recent reshoots on the Doctor Strange sequel have been rumored to have been the result of both the outcomes of the Loki TV show and Spider-Man: No Way Home, both of which brought the multiverse to the forefront in significant ways that are about to start paying off over the next few years. While the exact content of the reshoots has also been kept under wraps, it has been suggested that at least some of the new content has been shot to include new introductions to characters, as well as include “variants” of well-established MCU favorites. While this could be the start of us seeing some live-action versions of the likes of Captain Carter, Party Thor and others, it may even stretch far enough to tease the arrival of the Fantastic Four or X-Men. After all, Spider-Man: No Way Home managed to feature a blink-and-you-miss-it cameo by a long-rumored returnee, so something similar could be afoot here.
Whatever the truth turns out to be, we know from pretty much every trailer Marvel has released in the last five years that we will probably not see much of it in the final movie, but what we will see looks like it is undoubtedly going to be worth the wait.
