Marvel Studios has at last officially released the TV spot for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness which aired during the recent Super Bowl. While much of the footage and through-line is the same as the much longer, internet-shattering trailer, there are a few glimpses of seriously intriguing new footage. Including another look at several of Doctor Strange’s mysterious variants, Defender Strange and Zombie Strange, with the latter seen climbing a mountain before unleashing his monstrous dark magic.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will be the 28th installment of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is being directed by Evil Dead and Spider-Man 2 filmmaker Sam Raimi from a script written by Jade Halley Bartlett and Michael Waldron. The sequel stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Chiwetel Ejiofor as Karl Mordo, Elizabeth Olsen as Wanda Maximoff/The Scarlet Witch, Benedict Wong as Wong, Xochitl Gomez as America Chavez, and Rachel McAdams as Christine Palmer.
The Doctor Strange sequel will follow the events of small-screen Marvel ventures Loki and WandaVision, as well as big-screen outing Spider-Man: No Way Home, and finds Dr. Stephen Strange joining forces with both old and new mystical allies as the multiverse continues to collapse onto the MCU. Doctor Strange must travel into the multiverse to face a mysterious new adversary, who looks a lot like Doctor Strange himself…
Doctor Strange’s messing with the multiverse will seemingly bring The Master of the Mystic Arts face-to-face with the superhero think tank, The Illuminati, a group of some of Marvel’s most intelligent characters. Comprised of Namor, Mr. Fantastic, Iron Man, and Professor X, the TV spot includes a much-discussed line of dialogue that seemingly confirms the return of Patrick Stewart as the beloved leader of The X-Men.
Is That Really the Voice of Patrick Stewart as X-Men Leader Professor Xavier?
While the footage does not show his face, the voice of Patrick Stewart is unmistakable. Or is it? Patrick Stewart himself has since been asked about his comeback in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, and has, like oh so many other actors secretly involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, decided to play things incredibly coy. “You know, people have been imitating my voice ever since I came on the stage 60 years ago. So, I can’t be held responsible for that,” Stewart said with a wry smile.
Asked again about whether Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will see him return to the role of Professor Xavier, Patrick Stewart took things even further, simply asking “Who’s Doctor Strange?” Much like Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire before him, Patrick Stewart will have been sworn to secrecy lest he face the wrath of Kevin Feige. And while it seems highly likely that he will appear as a member of The Illuminati, his appearance should be no less crowd-pleasing.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is scheduled to be released in the United States on May 6, 2022, as part of Phase Four of the MCU.
