Walt Disney Pictures will be hoping to get their box office success back on track this year following the disappointment of last year’s Strange World, with Wish, a magical new animated feature that features the usual mix of heart, fantasy and an all-star voice cast. Bringing in many classical Disney elements, Wish will ask the question of how wishing on a star came to be? Check out the first look at the 62nd Disney animated feature in the trailer below.

Wish appears to have all of the elements needed to make it another worthy addition to the Disney canon, standing alongside timeless classics like Snow White and Cinderella, to modern cultural phenomenons such as Frozen and 2021’s Encanto. Featuring the voice talents of Ariana DuBose, Chris Pine and Alan Tudyk, Wish will be bringing a musical story of wonder to screens this November. The synopsis of the movie reads:

Wish asks the question: “How did the wishing star, which so many Disney characters wished upon, came to be?” Set in the magical kingdom of Rosas, the story introduces Asha (voice of Ariana DeBose), an optimist with a sharp wit who deeply cares about her community. When Asha turns to the sky in a moment of need and makes a wish, her plea is answered by a cosmic force—a little ball of boundless energy called Star. Together, they face the most formidable of foes to save her community and prove that when the will of one courageous human connects with the magic of the stars, wondrous things can happen.

Ever since Pinocchio showed woodcarver Geppetto wishing that his little wooden boy would become a real boy back in 1940, Disney have continued to reference the wish star in many of their animated movies. Along with the ever-popular song, When You Wish Upon a Star, as sung by Jiminy Cricket in Pinocchio, the star has become almost as iconic to Disney as Mickey Mouse himself. It is therefore appropriate that Wish arrives in cinemas as Walt Disney Pictures celebrate their 100th anniversary.

While the company may have gone through some rough patches over the the last ten decades, and have had plenty of controversial moments, they continue to be at the forefront of the industry and one of most successful movie companies in the world. As well as their own Disney Animated movies, the House of Mouse has scooped up many other companies such as Marvel Studios, Lucasfilm and 20th Century Fox to grow their behemoth empire, sometimes for better and sometimes for worse.

Although the arrival of Disney+ has expanded their output and allowed them to bring their entire archive to homes around the world like never before, the troubles of the box office during the Covid pandemic don’t quite seem to have gone away for Disney, with many opting to wait for movie releases to hit Disney+ rather than venture out to cinemas. While that will all change when the likes of Frozen 3 and Toy Story 5 come along, Wish will be another big test to see how well Disney can continue to connect with its audience entering its second century.
