Mufasa: The Lion King
cast confirmed, with Blue Ivy Carter and Mads Mikkelsen joining star-studded lineup.
The first trailer for the Lion King prequel/sequel, Mufasa: The Lion King, has quickly sparked some heated reactions online…many of them taking aim at the CGI on display. Set to be helmed by Moonlight director Barry Jenkins, Mufasa: The Lion King will tell the tale of the titular lion king while also introducing audiences to the daughter of Simba and Nala, a role that it has now been revealed will be voiced by Blue Ivy Carter.
The CGI, though, is the element that has caught the attention of many, and not for good reasons, with many wishing that Mufasa: The Lion King was a 2D-animated effort like the beloved 1994 original. “This would be way cooler as an animated film… just saying. CGI Lion King didn’t work and I don’t think this will either,” said one Disney fan, with another adding, “I feel like an animated feature would have likely gone over better…”
Fans have also taken to social to express their frustration with the ongoing Disney live-action remakes and reboots, with many wondering what exactly the point is of making a Lion King prequel. Considering that 2019’s The Lion King garnered over $1.6 billion at the worldwide box office, the point for the studio is obvious.
Alongside the new trailer, a more detailed plot synopsis for Mufasa: The Lion King has also now been released, which you can check out below.
“Mufasa: The Lion King” enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe.
