Discord voice chat on PS5 has been a long-awaited feature and it’s finally here for system software beta testers. Sony officially announced the feature’s arrival this morning as part of a blog post outlining what’s new in the latest beta drop. Which contains a host of new social features that go far beyond chatting with your friends from other platforms. For example, it’s now easier to hop into a game with a friend who’s already playing something. And you can more easily see which of your friends play the same games as you, too.
And if you like sharing your captures, the console now allows you to pick and choose which captures to upload to the PS app manually (previously these uploads would happen automatically whenever a capture was taken). For many, of course, the Discord voice chat for PS5 software beta users is the big new addition. And if you’re a part of the software beta you can set it up today.
Discord voice arrives for PS5 system software beta users today
There’s only one guaranteed way you’ll be able to use the voice chat feature right now. You’ll have to already be part of the system software beta program on PS5. Sony initially launched this quite some time ago. When it was testing the expanded storage. And the only way to get into the program was to register. If you haven’t already done that, you still can. But keep in mind it won’t guarantee you a spot in the program.
For anyone not part of the system software beta, Sony says the feature will arrive “later this year.” For those that have access, you need to have your Discord and PlayStation accounts linked, and be on the latest beta for PS5 as well as the latest version of the Discord mobile app.
PS5 is now more social than ever
Sony is adding in a handful of new ways to more easily interact with your friends on PlayStation. Let’s say you want to watch a friend play whatever game they’re in. Now all you have to do is open their profile and click on the share screen button to make a request. They’ll get a notification that you want to watch them play and start the screen share.
There’s also now a “join game” icon in party chats and a new tile on game hub pages that show you which friends play the same games you do. For instance if you just picked up God Of War Ragnarok, there will be a tile next to the one that shows your trophy progress labeled as “friends who play.”
Outside of the social features there’s more than a few gameplay and personalization changes. There’s now support for Variable Refresh Rate when playing at 1440p resolution (on supported displays), some new filter options, and you can now set preferences to manage who can invite other players to multiplayer game sessions you’ve started.
Additionally, users will find it easier to transfer PS4 save data in the cloud to their PS5 console, or from one PS5 to another PS5 over Wi-Fi or with a LAN cable. Lastly, US and UK uses can test a new preview feature that lets you use your voice to capture content. You can say things like “Hey PlayStation, capture that,” and the console will save your most recent gameplay. Sony says the default duration of the saved clip will be based on your settings.
