Discord has added a polls feature to the app, so you can now have your friends and community members vote on all kinds of stuff. It should be a fun way to liven up conversations in all of your channels. While it was technically possible to do polls in Discord before, there was never a native feature for it. You had to come up with inventive ways to make this work, such as by having people vote by using emoji reactions to a post. Then you would tally up all the reactions and see what wins.
But enough of that nonsense. Discord now has a true way to create and vote in polls. They’ll be much easier to track too. Once a poll is created, you can see all of the available options in the poll with changing results as people vote for their picks. Polls will also be available on both the desktop app and the mobile app. The only downside is that right now polls aren’t available to everyone.
This isn’t a case of Nitro users getting things first. The feature simply hasn’t rolled out completely. Luckily, Discord confirms that should be visible to everyone within the next few days as it rolls out globally.
The Discord polls feature will allow for up to 10 options
Everyone knows the true power of a poll is the variety in the responses. Discord polls allow for up to 10 response options so there’s a ton of variety to be had. On top of that, you can even jazz up each option by slapping an emoji onto it. Creating a poll will be pretty easy which is one of the best parts about it. It’s not going to be a feature that’s buried in menus and sub-menus. To create a poll, all you have to do is click the “+” button and there will be a poll option staring you right in the face. At least, once the feature is live for you.
There is a caveat to this, however. You will only be able to create a poll if you have permissions to send messages in a given channel. Furthermore, you’ll only be able to vote on a poll if you have the View Channel permission. Some users appear to be worried that channels will now become flooded with polls from anyone who has the ability to send a message. So the hope is that Discord will add a permission specifically for sending polls. This will likely only have a huge impact on servers with lots of users. Smaller servers shouldn’t see much problem with it.
If you need a refresher on permissions and roles, and what “role” they play in Discord, you can check out our full guide on the app. While Discord doesn’t have a Poll-specific permission in the works, here’s hoping one is created and added to the app for moderators. In the meantime, Discord says that polls will have a slowdown mode applied and automod filters. So there’s a small silver lining if you’re worried about too many polls rolling in.
Thank you for flagging this concern :c While we don’t have a specific permissions for Polls, all messages that are sent through Polls will apply Automod filters & have slowmode applied as it would with text messages.
