It has been announced that Dave Burke is no longer the Android engineering VP, he’s stepping down. Google is shifting things around following the merger of the Platforms & Ecosystems and Devices & Services divisions.

Dave Burke steps down, he’ll no longer lead the Android engineering team

Dave Burke has been a well-known figure in the Android world. He has been a part of pretty much every Android-related event, so many of you will easily recognize him. He has also been a part of Google I/O for years.

Burke first sent out an internal email to confirm that he’s “switching roles”, and since then, the email has also been published. In it, Burke said that he’s “shifting into an advisory position while exploring AI / bio projects”.

He added the following: “AI has the potential to play a pivotal role in accelerating drug discovery, with wide applicability, including in hard-to-treat pediatric cancers, a topic close to my heart”. As a reminder, Dave Burke has been a part of the Android story for 14 years, a very important part.

It’s also worth noting that Dave Burke has been in Google even longer than that. He started at the company back in 2007. While his story at Google is continuing, he’s stepping away from Android.

Platforms & Devices team is being reorganized as we speak

Based on reports, the resulting Platforms & Devices team is being reorganized as we speak. It’s still not clear what will the new structure look like, but things are changing within the company.

Now, we’re not sure if this was Dave Burke’s decision (to switch roles), but that’s easily possible. He clearly says that he’s very interested in AI and possibilities related to it, especially when it comes to accelerating drug discovery to battle cancer.

As a result of this role change, chances are that we won’t be seeing Dave Burke all that often anymore. If at all. Someone else will take his place during Android-related events. He could still appear from time to time, though in relation to AI, we’ll see.
