Cyberpunk 2077 is going into overdrive mode. Literally. With the announcement of the game’s latest patch this week, Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a new mode for PC called ‘Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode’ that cranks the graphics up to 11. If you thought the game world was gorgeous before, this new graphical upgrade is going to blow your socks off.

There is, one pretty mega huge caveat with this new graphical mode though. It only supports PC players. In the patch 1.62 patch notes, CD PROJEKT RED states that the new feature is available on PC. But it makes no mention of any availability on consoles like the Xbox Series X or PS5. In its current state, the feature would also be too demanding on the hardware components that make up those consoles. In short, they can’t handle the feature.

Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode in Cyberpunk 2077 has limited GPU compatibility

When Cyberpunk 2077 initially launched, it was an impressive-looking game despite its many bugs. And over time CDPR has worked what feels like tirelessly to improve the game to where it could live up the promises made before launch.

It’s as close as it’s ever been and the Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode really does assist with that. However, you will need a pretty beefy PC to run the feature properly. CDPR recommends only using RTX 3090 cards and up in the 30-series family, or the RTX 4070 Ti cards and up in the 40-series. This is because the feature is so GPU-intensive that it may not run smoothly on any other hardware.

That doesn’t mean that it won’t, of course. Just that it might not perform like you envision. That being said, if you have a 30-series card or a 40-series card that isn’t within the recommended parameters, you can always try turning on the new feature and tweaking the other graphics settings. Such as resolution. The feature is turned off by default.

The main issue you may run into is the frame rate. If you don’t have the recommended GPU, it’s likely you could run into low fps. Also worth noting is that this is being officially referred to as a “technology preview.” Think of this as a feature that is still in development and players are getting early access to it.

In addition to the new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode, patch 1.62 adds a few other changes to Cyberpunk 2077. You can read about the changes in CDPR’s official post.
