Crackcoon is something that would not have been out of place in the early 1980s, a video nasty in waiting with plenty of redder than red fake blood, cheesy acting and a pimped-up child’s plush as its central bloodthirsty creature. Low budget is the name of the game here, and that is something that has worked well for many horror movies recently. While the film is certainly not going to be in fear of joining any Oscars categories, there are plenty of horror fans who will be ready to chew up the gory fun with glee. The synopsis of the movie reads:

“When a synthetically-altered street drug is discarded in the woods by a drug dealer during a car chase with police, the fallout proves nothing less than horrific when an innocent raccoon eats it, transforming it into a nightmarish killing machine straight from the bowels of hell. With unsuspecting campers, tourists and residents of a mountain community all in close proximity to the epicenter, no one is safe from the monster’s unrelenting rampage.”

If there is one thing that low-budget filmmakers are great at, it is taking the opportunity to seize a trend and wring it dry. Cocaine Bear was a movie that had a toe, or claw, in a true story. Although the film took the very basic headline of truth and built an elaborate but thoroughly entertaining horror movie out of it. For every movie about wild animals discovering discarded drugs and going on a murderous rampage that has followed, it has simply been about one thing – creating a blood-fest on the smallest budget possible to try and cash in on it.

Following in the footsteps of Cocaine Shark and others, Crackcoon is expected to wrap filming later this month and will be released worldwide later this year. Will the CCU – the Cocaine Cinematic Universe as one Twitter user coined it – take another step up with its latest offering, or will it turn out of be a bad trip?

Based on the initial reaction to the trailer and the first poster for the movie, there is plenty of support for another round of crazed critter carnage. The trailer drew comments like, “Cocaine Bear has nothing on Crackcoon,” and “Crackcoonis already a masterpiece.” The one comment that seems to sum up the general feeling about the movie though, is this one.

Crackcoon has been created with the help of crowdfunding, something that has seen movies like Terrifer 2 and Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey come out of nowhere to take the world by storm. Will this movie be the next big box office surprise? Expect to find out later in 2023 when the movie is released in theaters.
