As promised, Kevin Smith has released a new trailer for Clerks III. Last week, Smith divulged that the trailer would be arriving on July 6, and to tease its release, the filmmaker has been dropping various posters for the sequel. With the big day now here, Smith has followed through with the premiere of the first trailer for Clerks III, taking fans back to the Quick Stop with Dante and Randal clocked back in. You can watch the trailer below.
Written and directed by Smith, Clerks III brings back Clerks stars Brian O’Halloran and Jeff Anderson to reprise their roles as Dante and Randal, accompanied by Smith and Jason Mewes as Silent Bob and Jay. Other familiar faces from the first film return, such as Marilyn Ghigliotti as Veronica and Scott Schiaffo as the Chewlie’s gum representative. Clerks II stars are also featured including Rosario Dawson’s Becky and Trevor Fehrman’s Elias, bringing the casts of the previous films together to cap off the trilogy.
“There’s a saying from the Tao that goes something like ‘To be great is to go on. To go on is to go far. To go far is to return,'” Smith said when the film was acquired at Lionsgate. “Thanks to Lionsgate, we get to return to where it all started with almost the whole cast that started it all! And for the first time since the first time we ever made a movie in 1993, we’re shooting the entire flick on location in New Jersey, as an ode to both the enduring allure of cinema and the resourcefulness and lunacy of its storytellers. Years ago, Dante and Randal made me a filmmaker – so now it’s time I return the favor.”
Clerks III Concludes the Trilogy With References to Clerks and Clerks II
This is one of those movies that had rolled around for quite a while in development hell before finally becoming a reality. Kevin Smith had wanted to make another Clerks movie for years after Clerks II, but by that point, Jeff Anderson had grown weary of portraying the role of Randal Graves. He was reluctant to return for another movie, and without Randal, Smith did not want to make Clerks III. That put the project on ice, and after a point, Smith had begun to accept that it would not happen.
Things changed after Smith had suffered a heart attack. The event inspired Smith to rewrite his screenplay for Clerks III with an entirely different story, centering on Randal suffering his own heart attack and similarly having a new outlook on life. Clerks III also gets meta as Randal decides to immortalize his life as a Quick Stop clerk by making a movie about their job at the store, allowing for Smith to recreate many of the same shots from the first movie. The new concept had Anderson sold with the actor finally agreeing to come back as Randal one more time.
Clerks III is scheduled to be released in theaters for two nights only, courtesy of Lionsgate and Fathom Events, on Sept. 13 and 15, 2022. Kevin Smith will also take the show on the road for Clerks III: The Convenience Tour, and you can pre-order tickets by heading to the official website.
