Citadel is officially due on Amazon a week from now, and with the series having already been renewed for a second season whilst also being armed with the Russo brothers as executive producers and a $300 million budget, it sounds like it’s set to make quite the splash in the minds of the public, at any rate.
An original work, Citadel will transport viewers to a world where the eponymous global spy agency has gone under, resulting in mindwipes for all of its employees. Mason Kane and Nadia Sinh, two former agents, soon find themselves in a race against time to halt the rise of the syndicate known as Manticore, all whilst dodging the ever-keen threats of gunfire, explosions, and human sexuality.
Of course, those who tuned in to Netflix’s The Gray Man might be a bit wary of taking the plunge on a Russo brothers spy thriller, but we’ve all had hiccups in our lives, and the Russos have assured audiences that a very specific demographic they’ve pleased several times already will feel right at home with Citadel.
In an interview with CBR, Joe Russo was happy to divulge that, if you’re a fan of the MCU, you’re going to be a fan of Citadel, citing the show’s scale and depth of adventure as its two biggest draws.
“This is high-octane. It’s really propulsive storytelling. There’s a lot of action in it, and there’s a lot of adventure in it. There are a lot of twists and turns. The ambition and the scale of it are massive — and MCU fans like immersive storytelling. My brother and I love immersive storytelling.”
In any case, it looks like Citadel certainly has the tools to succeed, and whether or not they all come together cohesively is something we’ll just have to wait to find out.
The first two episodes of Citadel‘s six-episode first season will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on April 28, with additional episodes releasing every Friday until the season’s conclusion on May 26.
