Ginger and Rocky take flight (but not really, as they’re chickens) in the new trailer for the upcoming animated sequel, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget. Due to be released on Netflix next month, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is the long-awaited sequel to the 2000 animated movie Chicken Run, and sees Aardman Animations join forces with the streaming giant. “Having pulled off a death-defying escape from Tweedy’s farm, Ginger has finally found her dream — a peaceful island sanctuary for the whole flock, far from the dangers of the human world. When she and Rocky hatch a little girl called Molly, Ginger’s happy ending seems complete. But back on the mainland the whole of chicken-kind faces a new and terrible threat. For Ginger and her team, even if it means putting their own hard-won freedom at risk — this time, they’re breaking in!”
Directed by Sam Fell (Flushed Away, ParaNorman) and from a screenplay by Karey Kirkpatrick and John O’Farrell, Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget will make a few changes to the cast. Thandiwe Newton will take over as Ginger, replacing Julia Sawalha, with Shazam! Fury of the Gods star Zachary Levi stars as Rocky Rhodes, replacing Mel Gibson.
Director Sam Fell recently explained why some of these changes were necessary for the sequel.
“Mel was a fabulous choice for Rocky when he was this playboy rooster. He was a movie star and Rocky was a movie star. It was perfect. But now Rocky’s more vulnerable. He’s a first-time father. It’s more Ginger’s movie, so his role is different.”

Filmmaker Sam Fell has also offered some insight into where audiences will find Ginger and her fellow chickens in the follow-up, describing their island safe haven as “Wakanda for chickens.”
“It’s Wakanda for chickens. The whole film is a bigger scale really. It’s all organic and warm, not a straight line in the place – nothing regimented, very organic and idyllic. It’s a beautiful, natural place. We spent time early on developing the world – the flowers, their gardens, and just thinking, ‘How would a chicken want to live? How would a chicken build a house? What’s their world like?’
You get yourself down to that level and start imagining objects – how big they are, and how you might utilise them. They’re obviously semi-human, these chickens, they talk. It was just nice thinking it through from scratch. ‘What do they need on that island?’ They don’t need that much actually, chickens – that’s what I like about them.”
Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget is scheduled to be released on 15 December 2023, by Netflix.
