Samsung entered the AI market with Galaxy AI earlier this year. Ever since, it wouldn’t shut up about it, hosting two Galaxy AI Unpacked events this year. Well, as powerful as it is, Samsung’s AI might be much more powerful in the future. According to a new report, OpenAI and Samsung are in talks about having ChatGPT power Galaxy AI.
ChatGPT powering phone-based AI? Does that sound familiar? This is the same sort of thing that Apple advertised with Apple Intelligence. If Apple’s on-device models can’t complete a task, then the system will tap GPT-4o to completely it. The software will ask for the user’s permission to connect to GPT-4o’s servers. That’s one of the things that sets Apple Intelligence apart.
iPhone users can’t expect this functionality to arrive for another couple of months, however. In fact, it might be closer to the iPhone 17’s launch by the time Apple Intelligence fully launches.
ChatGPT might power Galaxy AI eventually
Not many details have popped up, so you’ll want to take this information with a grain of salt. It comes from people close to the matter. The report states that OpenAI and Samsung are in discussions to integrate ChatGPT into Galaxy AI.
Since the two companies are still talking, there’s no telling when we’ll actually see this happen. Just don’t expect any announcements during the Galaxy S25 event.
We also have no idea how the companies plan to implement ChatGPT into Galaxy AI. There’s no telling if it’ll be similar to Apple Intelligence or if Samsung will try to be different. However, given Samsung’s recent actions, no one’s holding out for it not to copy Apple.
Samsung has its own AI models, and these work in tandem with Google’s Gemini models. So, who knows where ChatGPT will fit into these companies’ marriage? Only time will tell if this will make Galaxy AI a more compelling platform.
From the looks of it, Apple will turn the AI market on its ears. Right now, the only other companies offering compelling on-device AI are Google and Samsung. The on-device AI battlefield will populate with more companies, of course, but it seems like Apple will take an early lead.
