The sky is blue, water is wet, death is inevitable alongside taxes, cockroaches will inevitably survive the nuclear apocalypse, and a certain section of the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom will continue wail on Brie Larson at any available opportunity; such are the facts of life.
With The Marvels only four months away from coming to theaters, we can expect the hate train to continue gathering momentum between now and November, with Secret Invasion proving to be the latest bullet in the chamber for the Academy Award winner’s trolls and haters after Ben Mendelsohn’s Talos ended up as the latest character to make reference to the cosmic crusader’s absence.
Since headlining Captain Marvel half a decade ago, Larson has been restricted to a smattering of glorified cameos in the likes of Avengers: Infinity War, sequel Endgame, Ms. Marvel, and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, the majority of which have passed comment on her ongoing dalliances everywhere but Earth. As a result, memes are now going viral that have dubbed her with the unsavory nickname of “Captain Useless.”
Of course, it’ll all be water under the bridge should The Marvels come along, tear the box office a new one, and win widespread critical praise. On the other side of the coin, Captain Marvel remains the worst-rated of the MCU’s 32 features to date on Rotten Tomatoes, was the subject of an intense review-bombing campaign, and is generally lambasted any time its name comes up.
Things could go either way, then, even if we’ve already got a pretty good idea of where they’ll inevitably end up heading.
