Bluesky has launched a Trending Topics feature. This feature is available on both the mobile app and desktop. Users can see what’s trending on the platform. It seems Bluesky is trying to compete with X (formerly Twitter) where trending topics have been a feature for years.

Bluesky has grown fast recently, adding over 11 million users since early November. By December 20th it reached 25 million users.

The Trending Topics feature is currently in the beta stage

According to a report by Engadget, Bluesky’s new Trending Topics feature is now available in beta for all users. To access, tap the search icon on the bottom bar of the mobile app or look for the trending topics section in the right sidebar on the desktop. This shows users what topics are currently generating the most attention on the platform. Recently, Christmas, Nosferatu, and Wikipedia have been at the top of the list.

Trending Topics feature is only available in English for now as Bluesky is still testing. But it may add support for other languages soon. Bluesky says this is version 1 and will improve it based on users’ feedback.

It is noteworthy that Bluesky’s Trending Topics feature is available globally. Threads, another social media app, only shows trending topics in the US and Japan.

Bluesky allows users to turn off Trending Topics

In addition to showing trending topics, Bluesky is giving users more control. If someone finds the trending topics distracting or irrelevant, they can turn it off. They can just click the “X” button or go to settings> content & media and then uncheck the box that says “Enable trending topics”.

Bluesky also has an interesting feature: the ability to mute specific words or phrases. If there are topics that users don’t want to see in their trending list, they can mute them. To mute words, go to Settings > Moderation Tools, and then select “Mute Words and Tags” where you can add words to mute.

This is for a more personalized experience which could help Bluesky stay competitive in the growing social media market.
