Black Panther: Wakanda Forever finally released its trailer, and many of the questions we have been asking have finally been answered. Tenoch Huerta has been confirmed as Namor. Angela Bassett is in the film. And the movie will include an honor to the dearly departed Chadwick Boseman. But Wakanda Forever’s trailer includes a lot of Easter eggs and surprises to raise even more questions about the movie as well. In every frame, there is something hidden about either the plot of the film or even future MCU productions.
Along with a look at the Atlanteans, the movie seems like it’s going to be about Wakandan history and some conflict between their nation and the rest of the world. The trailer hints at Mayan gods, Wakandan ancestral planes, and the birth of a new Black Panther. There are already plenty of fan theories coming to a head with all the little clues we’ve been given. Some of them are a bit of a stretch but are fun to think about anyway.
Still, Wakanda Forever looks like it will be an epic movie. With the trailer set to Kendrick Lamar’s “Alright,” you can’t hold back any of the feelings this will hit you with.
The New Black Panther
The trailer opens on an image of Shuri (Letitia Wright) staring out into the ocean. The image is set to Bob Marley’s famous “No Woman No Cry.” This is a big hint at Shuri possibly taking up the mantle and becoming the new Black Panther. It also kind of prefaces the whole conflict between Wakanda and the Atlanteans. Without a Black Panther to defend Wakanda from such a conflict, Shuri may have no choice but to follow her brother’s path.
She’s also standing in front of what looks like a Mayan pyramid, and Marvel had said previously that they would be using Mayan culture as a basis to work off of when building what the Atlanteans would look like.
Next, we see a few shots of the Wakandan royal family sitting in the throne room with Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett) sitting on the throne since no one is left. Shuri is Ramonda’s youngest daughter, and she is next in line for the throne. After, we see the great Wakandan funeral procession, with everyone dressed in white and leading a parade through the city. We can assume this is for Chadwick Boseman’s character T’Challa, although we don’t know how they explain his death in the film yet. But now that T’Challa is gone, it would only make sense for Shuri to become the Black Panther. After all, she is currently serving as the hero in the comic books.
Ironheart Is Coming
During the course of the trailer, we get two looks at Riri Williams/Ironheart, played by Dominique Thorne. In one scene, she is in the lab greeting Shuri in a familiar way. Later, Riri is seen hammering a heart shape out of iron, reminiscent of Iron Man. Ironheart is set to get a standalone MCU series on Disney+ in 2023.
Alongside Thorne, it will star Alden Ehrenreich, Manny Montana, and Anthony Ramos. Riri Williams is a “genius teenage inventor who creates the most advanced suit of armor since Iron Man.”
The Atlanteans and Namor’s Origins
Next in the trailer is a shot of Namor’s underwater birth. This is an interesting reveal since it shows that the movie will serve not only as the Sub-Mariner’s introduction but as his origin story. Some continuing shots of Namor in the trailer show him as a younger character, with scenery hinting at his aged past. It seems that the character is ancient due to his unique biology. An interesting fact as well, Namor is chronologically the first mutant in the Marvel universe, so whether the MCU will bring this to bear remains to be seen.
We then see shots of the mounting conflict between Atlantis and Wakanda. There is a boat performing what looks like a less-than-friendly operation in the deep ocean. There is a fan theory based on a comic book storyline that Doctor Doom actually incites this war. The idea draws on the appearance of Michaela Coel’s character Aneka later in the trailer when she left the Dora Milaje to form the Midnight Angels to go after Doctor Doom with Deadpool. It’s a bit of a stretch, but still fun to think about.
After Namor’s birth, the next big look at the Atlanteans is Namor walking up on the Wakandan shore, where it looks like some Atlantean warriors are waiting for him. This comes after a shot of the Wakandan throne room being set aflame. We hear Queen Ramonda say, “I am queen of the most powerful nation in the world, and my entire family is gone.” This could indicate that Shuri may die in the movie as well. Or at least she may be temporarily dead, as one must travel to the ancestral plane to become Black Panther.
As the war between Wakanda and Atlantis continues to escalate, we see the Wakanda throne room begin to flood, which could only be accomplished by a massive tidal wave since the room is on top of a mountain. The trailer’s final shot shows the new Black Panther bearing their claws at some unseen assailant, most likely Namor. Tenoch Huerta is so happy to get this role, saying at San Diego Comic-Con:
“I’m excited and I’m so happy to be here, it’s an honor. And I want to say something really fast about inclusion. I come from the hood, seriously. And thanks to inclusion, I’m here. I wouldn’t be here without inclusion. A lot of kids out there in their hoods are looking at us, dreaming to be here, and they’re gonna make it! They’re gonna make it.”
