The first trailer for Black Adam brings Hollywood superstar Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson into the DC cinematic universe. Finally. After years of waiting, Warner Bros. Pictures has at last debuted The Rock as the comic book antihero, with the actor promising that the hierarchy of power in the DC universe is about to change.

Black Adam will introduce audiences to one of DC’s most popular characters. Nearly 5,000 years after he was bestowed with the almighty powers of the Egyptian gods—and imprisoned just as quickly—Black Adam (Dwayne Johnson) is freed from his earthly tomb, ready to unleash his unique form of justice on the modern world.

Black Adam sees Dwayne Johnson suit up as Teth-Adam AKA Black Adam, an antihero from Kahndaq who was created for the pages of DC Comics by Otto Binder and C. C. Beck. Teth-Adam is chosen by the wizard Shazam to harness the powers of the ancient Egyptian Gods. Gifted a set of powers that includes S for the stamina of Shu, H for the swiftness of Horus, A for the strength of Amon, Z for the wisdom of Zehuti, A for the power of Aten, and M for the courage of Mehen. He emerges as Black Adam, a warped protector and antihero, determined to enact his own vision of justice — a sense of justice that often involves bloodshed.

Black Adam Sees The Rock Suit Up as the DC Antihero At Last

Johnson has been signed on to this adaptation of Black Adam for so many years now (probably close to 5,000, in fact), with the actor having constantly teased the incoming power shift that will occur upon his arrival. Considering that it is real-life behemoth The Rock black-and-gold suiting up, it should come as no surprise that this hype has rung true.

Johnson has been asserting the difference between Black Adam and the likes of fellow DC characters Superman and Batman for some time. “In the traditional DC Universe, as we all know, if you do something wrong Superman and Batman are gonna try and bring you to justice,” the actor explained. “If you do something wrong to Black Adam, you’re going to die. It’s that simple. I believe this character is going to bring a unique edge to the superhero genre. We’re gonna be turning preconceived notions on their ear.” Based on the footage, Black Adam does have a somewhat different approach to the members of the Justice League.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra from a screenplay by Adam Sztykiel, Rory Haines, and Sohrab Noshirvani, Black Adam will be led by Dwayne Johnson as Teth-Adam AKA Black Adam. The comic book movie also stars Noah Centineo as Atom Smasher, Aldis Hodge as Hawkman, Quintessa Swindell as Cyclone, and Pierce Brosnan as Doctor Fate. Together, they make up the superhero team the Justice Society of America. Additionally, Marwan Kenzari, James Cusati-Moyer, Bodhi Sabongui, Mo Amer, and Uli Latukefu make up the rest of the supporting cast, with Sarah Shahi due to play Adrianna Tomaz.

Black Adam is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 21, 2022.
