“Whatever you do…don’t open your eyes,” we are warned in the latest trailer for the upcoming Netflix movie, Bird Box Barcelona. Of course, you will have to open your eyes to watch the footage, which drops audiences once again into this post-apocalyptic world haunted by an entity that pretty much plays by just one rule, if you see it, you die. Check out the newly released trailer for Bird Box Barcelona below.
From the producers of the global phenomenon, Bird Box, comes Bird Box Barcelona, an expansion of the movie that riveted audiences in 2018. Bird Box Barcelona begins after a mysterious force decimates the world’s population by causing all who see it to take their lives. Sebastian and his young daughter Anna must now navigate their own journey of survival through the desolate streets of Barcelona. But as they form an uneasy alliance with other survivors and make their way toward a safe haven, a threat more sinister than the unseen creatures grows.
Alongside the new trailer for Bird Box Barcelona, a haunting new poster has also been unveiled, and finds our central family trapped among the darkness as they attempt to survive and make their way to salvation. You can check out the new poster below.
Written and directed by Álex and David Pastor, Bird Box Barcelona stars Mario Casas (The Innocent, Cross the Line) as Sebastián, Alejandra Howard (The Wasteland, Fatima) as Anna, Georgina Campbell (Barbarian, All My Friends Hate Me) as Claire, Naila Schuberth (Blackout) as Sofia, Leonardo Sbaraglia (Wandering Heart, Today We Fix the World) as Padre Esteban, and Diego Calva (Babylon, Narcos: Mexico) as Octavio.
Bird Box Barcelona Is Just the First of Several Planned Spinoffs
Based on the 2014 novel of the same name by Josh Malerman, the first Bird Box introduces audiences to a world where a mysterious force that cannot be looked upon has destroyed the population. Led by Academy Award winner Sandra Bullock as Malorie Hayes, Bird Box has been a major hit for Netflix (despite mixed reviews) becoming the most-watched film on Netflix within 28 days of release. So, it should come as little surprise to learn that Bird Box Barcelona is just the first of many spinoffs currently in the works. Bird Box Barcelona has been described as “the first of multiple local-language Bird Box spinoffs,” all of which will be set in the same universe as the hit movie led by Sandra Bullock. Producer Dylan Clark has revealed further insight into the spinoff, declaring that the project “is not a prequel.”
“The events that we see Malorie/Sandra Bullock endure in the original Bird Box are happening at the same time that Sebastian/Mario Casas is going through his journey,” Clark reveals. “Being in Barcelona gave us a chance to see how surviving this intense threat in an iconic city poses different challenges.”
Fellow producer Chris Morgan meanwhile has further teased the plans for the Bird Box franchise calling Bullock’s character Malorie’s journey “just the first chapter of this global, apocalyptic event. As we were developing the original film, we often discussed what would be happening at the same time in different countries around the world.”
Bird Box Barcelona is scheduled to debut on Netflix on July 14, 2023.
