Bethesda has officially announced a launch date for Mighty DOOM, it’s top-down shooter that has you slaying demons and sending them back to hell in a whole new way. Technically, the game is already available. But only in early access and only in certain countries. Such as Australia and New Zealand. For most of the world though, the game won’t be playable until next month.

You can pre-register for the game now however if you would rather play this instead of the admittedly better options, DOOM and DOOM II. Both of which are available on Android today, and are pretty decent ports. Or you could just fire up GeForce NOW and play DOOM (2016) and DOOM Eternal. For those who haven’t heard of it yet, Mighty DOOM is a top-down shooter that in essence, is a DOOM re-skin of Archero. Another top-down mobile shooter.

Mighty DOOM gets a late March launch date

Eager to give the game a try? Well you won’t have to wait that much longer. Bethesda has set the official launch date of Mighty DOOM for March 21. This includes the US, and “select countries.” Pre-registration is also up on both the Play Store and App Store.

Not your typical DOOM game

In Mighty DOOM, you take on the role of the Mini Slayer, which looks a whole lot like the mini figurines you can find tucked away in secret locations throughout the two most recent mainline titles. As one would expect Mighty DOOM offers you a bevy of upgrades to make demon slaying easier. There’s a thinly-veiled level of challenge at first, but once you peel away those layers it becomes clear that the challenge is basically surface-level.

The game’s design is built around a foundation of a pretty steep grind. Where replaying over and over rewards you with the in-game currency needed to upgrade your gear for another run, and hopefully make it further than before. Making it an easy time sink. Also worth noting is that the gameplay is basically one continuous level, split up by portal jumps or smashing walls to move to the next area with a new crop of enemies, and an eventual boss fight every ten levels or so.

Does the game have the capacity to be fun? Sort of. It’s the type of game you play when you want something bite-sized. Maybe you’ve got 5 minutes, maybe 10. You can boot up Mighty DOOM for a slice of demon slaying. In the end though, it just doesn’t feel like a DOOM game. Think of it like a bottle of Hint Water. DOOM is on the label here. But just like Hint Water, the flavor isn’t really there. It’s bland, and you know you’d rather have the good stuff.

That being said, the game is free-to-play. So if you were wanting a DOOM game from Bethesda that is playable on mobile and doesn’t cost you money, here you go.
