Beau Is Afraid comes from Hereditary director Ari Aster.

Academy Award winner Joaquin Phoenix finds himself at the center of a twisted, visually arresting odyssey in the first trailer for Beau Is Afraid. Formerly known as Disappointment Blvd., this first footage from Beau Is Afraid offers us at least some idea of what’s to come, with A24 managing to maintain a lot of the mystery. You can check out the first trailer for Beau Is Afraid below.

“From his greatest fears comes the greatest adventure,” reads the tagline within the trailer, as Phoenix’s character, Beau, is haunted by memories of his childhood and his relationship with his estranged mother. Putting off visiting his dear old mum, Beau is left somewhat incapacitated when he is by a car. Taken in by an unorthodox therapist, and essentially imprisoned, Beau attempts to escape and make the journey home.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

What follows is a collage of bizarre, intriguing sequences, as Beau runs from gunfire, enters an animated world, treks through everything from forests to snowy mountains, ages into an old man, and experiences all manner of love and fear along the way.

Beau Is Afraid comes courtesy of director Ari Aster, a filmmaker who has already made his mark in the modern horror genre with the likes of Hereditary and Midsommar, with Beau Is Afraid based at least partly on the director’s 2011 short film, Beau. Similarly, Beau follows a neurotic middle-aged man whose attempt to visit his mother is delayed indefinitely when his keys are mysteriously taken from his door. The man soon finds himself being haunted by an increasingly sinister chain of upsetting events, which certainly sound a lot like what is teased in this first look at Beau Is Afraid.

Along with the first footage from Beau Is Afraid, a release date has also now been revealed, with the surrealist comedy-drama set to land in theaters in April.

Described as a “decades-spanning surrealist horror film set in an alternate present,” Beau Is Afraid looks to be an in-depth character study of the titular Beau, an extremely anxious man who has a fraught relationship with his overbearing mother and who never knew his father, who attempts to make the journey home but instead comes face-to-face with various supernatural threats. “It’s a unique project,” star Nathan Lane teased of the movie. “It’s like he’s invented a whole new genre, and it’s all anchored by Joaquin Phoenix, who’s just extraordinary.”

Beau Is Afraid has amassed a stellar ensemble cast alongside Joker star Joaquin Phoenix and includes the likes of Parker Posey (Lost in Space), Stephen McKinley Henderson (Dune), Denis Ménochet (The French Dispatch), Hayley Squires (In the Earth), Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark) and Zoe Lister-Jones (How It Ends). Additionally, Nathan Lane (Only Murders in the Building, The Lion King), Patti LuPone (Hollywood), Amy Ryan (Only Murders in the Building), and Kylie Rogers (Yellowstone) joined the cast, with Daybreak actor Armen Nahapetian starring as young Beau.

Beau Is Afraid is scheduled to be released in the United States on April 21, 2023.
