Apple is embedding new cameras into the iPhone 16 Pro, according to a new rumor. The upcoming iOS smartphone may have some serious upgrades compared to all the previous generation of iPhones.

Apple is upgrading the iPhone 16 Pro with new cameras

Apple has remained loyal to the three-lens design for a few generations of iPhones. However, the company has been embedding the same 12MP ultrawide cameras in its smartphones since the iPhone 11, which was released in 2019.

A new rumor claims Apple is ditching the 12MP ultrawide camera, at least for the top-end models in the upcoming iPhone 16 series. In other words, the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max are reportedly getting 4X the megapixels for the ultrawide lens, a new rumor claims.

A post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo claims the iPhone 16 Pro and Pro Max will be equipped with 48MP ultra-wide cameras. Specifically speaking, Apple may have replaced the tried and tested Sony IMX633 sensor with the Sony IMX903 sensor.

Apple to reuse the telephoto lens from iPhone 15 Pro Max?

Incidentally, the iPhone 15 Pro Max too got a serious upgrade in the camera department. Apple replaced the 12MP 3x telephoto camera that’s currently embedded in the iPhone 14 Pro Max, with a 12MP periscope telephoto module capable of 5x optical zoom.

The 12MP periscope telephoto lens has ensured the iPhone 15 Pro Max remains one of the best devices for mobile photography. The 12MP telephoto module is a combination of four lenses that bend light multiple times to achieve exceptional zoom.

The latest rumor claims Apple will embed this same lens in the iPhone 16 Pro and the Pro Max models. If true, the Pro Max model will continue to offer 5x optical zoom. This would also mean there won’t be an increase in the optical zoom capabilities.

To summarize, the Apple iPhone 16 Pro and the Pro Max models would feature the same triple rear camera setup. They would get a 12MP telephoto lens with 5x zoom just like their predecessors. The other two camera modules would have 48MP ultrawide lenses.

Given the serious bump, Apple would invariably push the photographic capabilities of the upcoming iPhones. Moreover, Apple is also rumored to embed a new Capture button to position the devices as photography-centric phones.
