According to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is set to ship its first OLED MacBook next year (2024).
Currently, all MacBooks have used LCD panels, and the latest 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pros use mini-LED and ProMotion. So OLED would be a huge move for Apple. And it’s kind of surprising that it has taken them this long to make an OLED MacBook, to be quite honest. Since the iPhone has been OLED since 2017.
Kuo did not specify in his tweet storm whether this OLED MacBook would be a Pro or an Air. However, display industry analyst Ross Young did state last month that Apple was planning to introduce a new 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display in 2024. Ross is also expecting Apple to release 11.1-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays next year.
OLED makes sense for a MacBook Air
Since the MacBook Air was first shown off in 2008 – when Steve Jobs took it out of an envelope – it has always stood for a super thin and light laptop. So using OLED on the MacBook Air would make lots of sense here. OLED allows Apple to make a thinner device, as well as foldables. But OLED is thinner and it doesn’t overheat like some other display technologies.
So even though an OLED MacBook Air would mean a higher price, and it’s really “Pro’s” who would really want an OLED laptop, it does make a lot of sense to put it into an Air. Now the price point would be interesting. Since the new M2 MacBook Air is already priced at $1,199. OLED is a lot more expensive than LCD, so we could see it getting closer to $1,499 for an entry-level laptop.
2024 is shaping up to be an exciting year for Apple products, even with 2023 being a pretty boring one. Outside of the much anticipated and rumored AR/VR headset.
