Summary: Apple is reportedly developing two new versions of the Vision Pro headsets. This includes a lighter, more affordable model and another that connects to a Mac for lower latency. These versions are part of Tim Cook’s long-term push toward true AR glasses, though technical and pricing challenges still stand in the way.

Earlier this month, we heard a rumor that Apple had kicked off production on the Vision Pro 2. The headset is launching later this year, but it might not be the only Vision Pro headset Apple is working on. According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman in his latest Power On newsletter, Apple has two versions of the Vision Pro headset in the works.

Two versions of the Vision Pro

The report is slightly confusing because it doesn’t actually tell us when either of these models will be released. However, Gurman notes that at least two versions of Vision Pro are in development.

One of the models is a lighter and less expensive version of the current Vision Pro. According to Gurman, the current model weighs about 1.5 pounds. For a headset strapped to your face, it’s heavy. It places unnecessary strain on the wearer’s neck, which is why some users have resorted to third-party straps to help relieve some of the discomfort.

The second issue is price. At $3,500, this sits well out of reach for the casual user. Apple wants to address that in one of the models. However, as Gurman points out, the incoming Trump tariffs could present an even more difficult challenge.

The next model that Apple is reportedly working on is one that can tether to a Mac via a wired connection. Right now, the Vision Pro is more or less a self-contained device. However, Apple wants to develop a version capable of tethering over a wired connection. This helps reduce latency and can act as a secondary display. Since some users are using the Vision Pro for surgeries or flight simulators, a low-latency model will benefit these types of use-case scenarios.

Tim Cook’s true vision

According to Gurman, these upgrades are a stepping stone towards Apple CEO Tim Cook’s grand vision of true augmented reality glasses. Gurman’s sources tell him that Cook is making it a top priority and “cares about nothing else.”

However, it might take a while before Cook’s vision becomes a reality. Many obstacles stand in the way, namely technologies that have yet to be perfected. These include super-high-resolution displays, small batteries that can offer hours of usage, and a high-performing chipset that can keep up with the demand.

Apple also needs to figure out a way to make such a device as compelling as the iPhone. That’s one area where the Vision Pro fell short. It is a technological marvel and an instance of Apple actually delivering what it showed in the ads. However, not many people have found a use for it. Plus, the hefty price tag is a giant turn-off for many customers.
