Apple’s iPhone 15 series marks one of the most significant generational updates, thanks in part to the introduction of USB-C. However, for those who have just got their iPhone 15, setting up the phone might pose a challenge due to a new iOS 17 bug, which disrupts the data transfer process during setup, leaving users frustrated with an endless boot loop displaying the Apple logo.

While this issue affects all iPhones running iOS 17, it particularly impacts users who are upgrading to the iPhone 15 series and choose the “From Another iPhone” option during setup. However, it is important to note that Apple has addressed the issue and released the iOS 17.0.2 update.

What to do if you haven’t set up your new phone?

If you’re fortunate enough to read this article before setting up your new iPhone 15, the first thing you need to do is begin the setup process as usual but skip the data transfer option. Once the phone is set up, update it to the latest iOS 17.0.2 software and then reset your phone to factory settings, which can be done through the Settings app. Now, restart the setup process and transfer the data from your old iPhone.

However, it is important to note that for some users, their iPhones may prompt them to update to the new iOS version during the initial setup, thus streamlining the process.

Stuck in a boot loop?

If you find yourself stuck in an endless boot-up loop displaying the Apple logo, there is a solution, but it requires a computer.

Connect your iPhone 15 to your computer using a cable and, while connected, perform the following series of button presses in quick succession to enter recovery mode. First, press the volume up button, followed by the volume down button, and finally, press and hold the side button. Now, continue holding the side button even as your iPhone begins to reboot. Eventually, you will see an icon on the screen resembling a computer connected via a cable.

Once completed, the device should become visible in your computer’s software. If you’re using a Windows system, it may appear in iTunes, while on macOS, it would be in Finder. After locating the device, you’ll have the option to either “Restore” or “Update” your iPhone. Choose “Restore” to initiate the process of resetting the phone.

At this point, some users might see the option to update to iOS 17.0.2 when starting the phone. However, if you do not see this option, set up your phone without the data transfer and then update it.
