“Apple steals from Samsung!” Nah uh! “Samsung steals from Apple!” This is an age-old argument, and it’s only gotten more heated. We can’t deny that Samsung has been peeking over at Apple’s desk a lot this year, but this time, it looks like it’s Apple’s turn to return the favor. According to a new leak, it looks like Apple could call its next affordable iPhone the iPhone 16E.
Before diving into the nomenclature of this phone, @MajinBuOfficial shared some interesting renders. These are case renders for the phone, and we see that the camera package may look a little different from the iPhone SE 3. That handset sported a single camera on the back. Looking at the render, we see that the case maker left room for what could be at least one additional camera.
The source also states that this phone could also include the action button that we see on the more expensive iPhones. In case you don’t know, the action button is a customizable button that allows you to perform actions such as opening the camera, turning on the flashlight, opening the translate feature, recording a voice memo, etc. This will be a great addition to the more affordable phone.
Apple could call its next affordable iPhone the iPhone 16E
You’ll want to take this news cautiously, as we’re still dealing with early information. The same source that provided the renders also stated that Apple could call its next affordable phone the iPhone 16FE… sorry, the iPhone 16E.
We can’t deny that this naming scheme is something that we’ve seen before. Rather than making the affordable phone its own series, Apple could launch it as the little sibling in its main series. This is similar to Samsung’s Galaxy FE subseries or Google’s Pixel A subseries.
This isn’t some accusation that Apple is stealing from Android or anything. Rather, it brings to light that Apple could shift the mentality toward its affordable phones. Rather than feeling like they’re buying the weaker iPhone, people will be buying the weaker iPhone 16.
Mentality
There’s a difference there. To the consumer, it’s better to buy the weaker version of a more powerful phone than to buy a phone that’s just weaker. Heck, for all we know, Apple could use the same exact hardware in this new phone as it did in the iPhone SE 3, but it doesn’t matter.
Imagine two real estate agencies listing the same house. One calls it a “large house” while the other one calls it a “miniature mansion.” Which one sounds more enticing? Again, this is early information, so there’s no telling if Apple will choose this name.
