Apple has been in hot water lately. The company recently agreed to pay $95 million to settle a Siri privacy lawsuit. Also, the authorities recently warned the brand to put better warning labels on its AirTag accessory. Apple Intelligence has also been the subject of several headlines lately but for all the wrong reasons. Apple AI is under scrutiny for giving false news about Luke Litter becoming the champion of the Darts Championship, even before he played in the final.
An iPhone notification falsely claimed that Litter was the Champion of the PDC World Darts Championship
Notably, on Friday morning, several iPhone users received a notification based on a news story of Litter winning the Darts Championship. The notification mentioned the BBC as the source of the news. It appeared that the BBC was reporting that Litter had won the whole Darts event. However, it was a false story because Litter hadn’t even played in the final match yet.
The notification appears to be coming directly from the BBC. However, it is the Apple AI or Apple Intelligence that summarized that Litter was the Champion of the Darts Championship. Notably, one of the BBC News employees also received the same notification.
“It is essential that Apple fixes this problem urgently – as this has happened multiple times,” said a BBC spokesperson. “As the most trusted news media organization in the world, it is crucial that audiences can trust any information or journalism published in our name and that includes notifications”, the spokesman added further.
This is not the first time Apple Intelligence has reported a fake story
Apple launched Apple Intelligence in the UK in December last year. Soon after launch, Apple ran into some trouble with inaccurate summaries of news stories and other notifications. Apple AI sent a notification for a generative AI story that had a misleading headline about a high-profile killing in the United States. The BBC filed a similar complaint to the US tech giant for the same. Soon after, a major journalism body urged Apple to scrap its new generative AI feature.
