Before Google released the Pixel 9 series at the beginning of August, it was rumored that the phones might launch with the Android 15 update. We later reported that this wouldn’t be the case with a source having told us that Android 14 would be coming with Google’s new phones this year. This turned out to be true. Android 15 is still coming, but Google has delayed its release. Now that the Pixel 9 series has been released, those who bought one of its four variants are waiting for the new software version, and probably wondering when it’s coming officially.

It hasn’t been confirmed by Google, but a new rumor says that Android 15 may not launch until October. It’s worth noting, however, that there is some distinction to be made here. Because there’s Android 15 in its official over-the-air rollout, and then there’s the Android Open Source Project version that gets released. Most of the time alongside or just before the official OTA version.

Android 15 OTA update may not launch for Pixel phones until mid-October

If you’re eagerly awaiting Google to roll out the Android 15 OTA to your Pixel 9 or other Pixel smartphones, you’ll be waiting a bit longer, it seems. According to Android Authrotiy’s Mishaal Rahman, the OTA isn’t coming until October. What’s more, is that there’s a chance it might not be released until the middle of October. If that’s the case, then there’s still over a month before Google will push the software update.

When Google does push it out, it’ll be available for all Pixel devices from the Pixel 6 series onward. Here’s where things get a bit interesting. The OTA rollout might not happen until October. However, the AOSP build of the software version is said to be getting released a lot sooner.

Google plans to push the Android 15 source code as early as September 3

Right off the bat, it’s important to note that the source code for Android 15 isn’t something that most users will generally be able to work with. If you know what you’re doing, you can certainly get it installed. That being said, the source code drop is largely for developers and manufacturers to use. So they can get their apps and devices in working order with the new software.

According to Rahman, the Android 15 source code is seemingly being released as early as September 3. This means developers and manufacturers will have access to the software relatively soon. Although this won’t be intended for end users, those who want to check out Android 15 can still install the most recent version of the Android 15 beta. As long as they’re participating in the beta program. For anyone else, there are still more than a few more weeks to wait.
