Donald Trump hates his accusers

A game of “No, you!” being played by very rich, very powerful people.

Trump team has finally pulled out their long-awaited ace of irony: accusing someone else of staging a witch hunt.

Yes, the man who spent four years crying foul at any criticism—and let’s not forget, claimed the 2020 election was stolen by, I don’t know, the Illuminati or some secret cabal of ballot-stuffing elves—now has his allies in the FBI investigating one of his most prominent critics, New York Attorney General Letitia James. The very same Letitia James who led the legal charge against Trump and his business empire, securing a jaw-dropping $354 million judgment against him.

FBI and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York are investigating Letitia James for alleged mortgage fraud. Yes, mortgage fraud. The woman who took on Trump, the king of questionable financial dealings, is being accused of fudging paperwork on mortgage applications for two properties—a home in Virginia and another in Brooklyn. The accusations? That James misrepresented her primary residence on a Virginia property in 2023 while also allegedly playing fast and loose with residency details on the Brooklyn property she’s owned since 2001. The referral for this investigation came from William Pulte, the director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, who is claiming James falsified records to nab favorable government-backed loans.

It’s no secret that Letitia James has been in Trump’s crosshairs since she campaigned in 2018 on a promise to investigate him. Back then, she vowed to shine a “bright light” on his murky real estate dealings in New York—a promise she delivered on when her office filed a civil fraud case that exposed years of shady business practices. Trump spent years dodging accountability for his own financial shenanigans—everything from tax evasion to inflating the value of his properties to secure loans. Yet now, his team is going after James for… allegedly lying about her primary residence?

Despite the potential seriousness of the allegations, the media reaction has been oddly muted. If the allegations against James are true, it would be a major scandal. It would also give Trump and his allies a shiny new talking point to undermine the credibility of her previous investigations.

As Trump solidifies his grip on government institutions, we can expect more “investigations” into his perceived enemies. The Department of Justice, the FBI, the IRS – all potentially transformed from instruments of justice to instruments of revenge. And for what? So one man’s ego can be soothed? So his supporters can cheer as their political opponents face the same treatment they decried as unfair? The American experiment was supposed to be better than this.
