Disney and R-rated horror have never exactly gone hand-in-hand, but that’s changed in a major way ever since the Mouse House both acquired 20th Century Fox and increased its stake in Hulu. As a result, subscribers to the company’s in-house streaming service have been bombarded with adult-skewing content, and the divisive Clock is the latest to make an instant splash.
Per FlixPatrol, the psychological nightmare distributed by subsidiary 20th Digital Studio has charted on the Disney Plus worldwide rankings after being made available to international customers outside of the United States. While critics have gotten a kick out of the twisted and fear-inducing tale, the audience reception has been a lot more muted.
On Rotten Tomatoes, Clock debuted with a near-perfect score that’s since dwindled down to a still-solid 79 percent, but it’s the decidedly average audience approval rating of 56 percent that paints the picture of a polarizing addition to Disney’s unexpectedly expansive collection of original horrors.
Dianna Agron stars as a woman who enrolls in an experimental clinical trial to try and remedy her broken biological clock, after she begins to feel the weight of pressure from her friends and family when it comes to having children. However, it would be an understatement to say that it was deemed experimental for a reason, with the lines between reality and hallucinatory becoming increasingly blurred as unsettling and eerie events begin to plague every aspect of her existence.
Clock isn’t the first Disney-backed horror to end up as an on-demand sensation, and we dare say it won’t be the last, either.
