The official trailer for David O. Russell’s upcoming crime drama Amsterdam has dropped, and it features an all-star cast led by Christian Bale, Margot Robbie, and John David Washington. Written and directed by David O. Russell (The Fighter, Three Kings), Amsterdam is set in the 1930s and follows three friends as they uncover a shocking conspiracy while trying to clear their name after being wrongly accused of murder. Amsterdam is expected to be a major awards contender when it arrives in theaters later this year. You can check out the trailer below.
While Amsterdam’s plot details are still being kept under wraps, and the trailer doesn’t give much away either, the official logline of the film reads:
“Amsterdam, the latest film from acclaimed writer/director David O. Russell, is a fascinating and richly intricate tale that brilliantly weaves historical fact with fiction for a timely, cinematic experience. 20th Century Studios’ and New Regency’s original crime epic about three close friends who find themselves at the center of one of the most shocking secret plots in American history.”
The trailer for Amsterdam opens with Chris Rock losing his mind at the sight of a dead man in a “box.” It’s soon revealed that the leading trio of two soldiers, Burt (Christian Bale) and Harold (John David Washington), and a nurse, Valerie (Margot Robbie), met during the war and formed a close bond. They now find themselves on the run after being wrongly accused of murder and seeking help.
And in comes Robert De Niro. “My friend was killed because of something monstrous that he had seen,” his character says, who seems to have the demeanor of a high-ranking government official. “I’m about to do something that could cost me my life,” De Niro continues. The stakes really are high and dangerous, it seems. What is the “shocking secret plot” and how dark it will be remains to be seen, but judging by the trailer, Amsterdam looks like a fun, light-hearted period noir.
The trailer also gives a glimpse of Timothy Olyphant as a deranged killer and Mike Myers being hilarious as always. The rest of the cast of Amsterdam consists of Rami Malek, Zoe Saldaña, Robert De Niro, Michael Shannon, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Andrea Riseborough, Matthias Schoenaerts, Alessandro Nivola, Taylor Swift, Leland Orser, and Sean Avery.
Amsterdam Marks David O. Russell’s Return to Filmmaking in Seven Years
After a string of hits in the early 2010s, The Fighter, Silver Linings Playbook, and American Hustle, which earned David O. Russell five Academy Award nominations, the acclaimed director is now back behind the camera with another high-profile drama, Amsterdam. Russell last helmed 2015’s Joy, which received mixed reviews and moderate box-office success. Russell has been embroiled in controversy of late after past claims of his abusive on-set behavior and sexual misconduct resurfaced.
However, Hollywood is known for having a short memory, and Russell is back to deliver another hit. And so far, things are looking favorable – a stacked cast, a talented writer and director, and arguably the greatest cinematographer of the century (Emmanuel Lubezki)—Amsterdam should be on the watchlist of every filmgoer. Also, be sure to expect fireworks in the awards season this year.
Amsterdam will be released in theaters on November 4, 2022.
