With so many movies being made about the infamous Amityville house over the years, this one was just a matter of time. The home that served as the subject of The Amityville Horror and many other genre films for decades is now going intergalactic with its next installment. From Wild Eye Releasing, the new movie Amityville in Space takes the haunted house and sends it out of this world where it can unleash its evil within among the stars. It’s as bonkers as it sounds, as you can see for yourself in the trailer below.
Our story begins when the infamous murder house is exorcised from Earth and reappears in outer space, reminding you that “screams go unheard in space.” The film is directed by Mark Polonia (Sharkula) and stars Titus Himmelberger, Cassandra Hayes, Tim Hatch, Ryan Dalton, and Jeff Kirkendall.
Amityville in Space Is One of Many, Many Movies Based on the Infamous “Murder House”
On Nov. 13, 1974, Ronald DeFeo Jr. murdered six members of his family in their Dutch Colonial home in a suburban Amityville neighborhood. He was convicted of murder in 1975, the same year George and Kathy Lutz moved their family into the infamous home. In less than one month’s time, the Lutzes fled the house, claiming that they had been terrorized by paranormal phenomena in the allegedly haunted house.
The killings and alleged haunting inspired the 1977 book The Amityville Horror by author Jay Anson. Touted as a “true story,” the book got a lot of attention and led to the production of the movie adaptation that was released in 1979. Starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder, the film was a big hit at the box office, spawning a film franchise that is still ongoing to this day, where it has since gone to outer space.
The Amityville Horror was given a variety of sequels, and as the years and films went on, we’ve seen the series go in many directions. Just last month, Lionsgate released the latest Amityville movie, Amityville Uprising. In that film, an Amityville police department sergeant must protect his son from zombies after a chemical explosion at a nearby army base releases toxic gas into the air, causing acid rain that reanimates dead bodies.
One of the more well-known installments is the 2005 film, The Amityville Horror, brought the franchise back to its roots as a remake of the original movie. It starred Ryan Reynolds, Melissa George, and Chloe Grace Moretz and was directed by Andrew Douglas. The movie was a pretty big hit at the box office but left critics mostly unimpressed, as it did not add anything new to the series or the story.
Amityville in Space will be released by Wild Eye Releasing in July. We can only wonder where the Amityville house will be heading to after its intergalactic adventures, but in any case, chances are we have not seen the last of these wild horror movies based on the infamous murder house just yet.
