Amazon has named Doug Herrington as the new CEO of its consumer business. Herrington will take over the role from the current CEO Dave Clark on July 1st. Clark is leaving the company after 23 years. He announced his resignation earlier this month.
Doug Herrington also has a long association with Amazon. He joined the retail giant back in 2005 to build out its Consumables business. Over his 17-year-long career at the company, Herring led various business arms. He launched the grocery delivery service Amazon Fresh in 2007. Most recently, he took over the lead of Amazon’s North American Consumer business in 2015 and has been serving in that role since.
The CEO of Amazon’s consumer business, aka Worldwide Amazon Stores business, reports to the CEO of the company, Andy Jassy. Herrington will also report to Jassy. The two leaders have been part of the company’s S-team (group of senior leaders) since 2011.
“He is a builder of great teams and brings substantial retail, grocery, demand generation, product development, and Amazon experience to bear,” Jassy said in a letter announcing the leadership change. “I think Doug will do great things for customers and employees alike, and I look forward to working with him in this leadership role.”
Doug has his task cut out, though. Following a massive surge during the pandemic, Amazon’s growth has slowed down in recent quarters. It is still making truckloads of money but not as fast as it did in the past. Thankfully, Doug’s era as the CEO of Amazon’s consumer business will begin with Prime Day 2022, one of the busiest business periods for the company. This year’s Amazon shopping carnival falls on July 12-13.
The latest leadership change at Amazon also sees John Felton, an 18-year company vet, take up the lead of the Operations organization. Felton has 12 years of experience in Retail and Operations finance leadership at the retail giant. He served as a VP of Worldwide Operations and also briefly led Amazon Logistics. Felton joined the S-team in September 2020.
Outgoing Worldwide Amazon Stores CEO will join Flexport
Dave Clark, who joined Amazon back in May 1999, worked his way up to become the company’s CEO of the consumer business in January 2021. He served various other leadership roles at the retail giant in a career spanning more than two decades. Following his departure from Amazon next month, Clark will take over as the CEO of supply chain software company Flexport. He will begin the new journey on September 1st.
