Amazon is one of the biggest online retail stores in the world, but it does experiment with launching physical locations. According to CNBC, however, some of those stores won’t be around for much longer. Amazon just closed down 68 of its physical stores.
Amazon closed down 68 physical stores
The company Amazon mainly identifies as the online retail to rule them all; however, it has physical stores. There are brick-and-mortar stores around the country where you can buy Amazon goods in person. Notably, there are the Amazon Bookstores that debuted back in 2015.
While there are quite a few of these stores around, Amazon just closed down a fair amount of them; 68 of them, to be exact. This includes bookstores, 4-star shops, and the popup locations that dot the US and UK.
Now, when a company shuts down this many locations, it’s usually because they’re in financial trouble, but this is Amazon we’re talking about. An Amazon representative told CNBC that this isn’t indicative of financial woes or bad numbers. The representative said that the company is merely experimenting with some other types of stores. There’s the possibility of an amazon clothing store becoming a thing.
What are Amazon’s other physical stores?
Amazon is still working on producing different kinds of physical stores, and it has some ventures already underway. Firstly, it still has stores on the ground that focus on healthy groceries. A while back, the company bought Whole Foods, and it hasn’t discussed any plans to get rid of those.
Also, Amazon is developing its cashier-less stores. The concept behind these stores is that customers can walk into the store, grab a cart and start loading up on what they want. After that, they can simply walk out of the store. The tech in the store will know what they picked out and charge their card when they leave the store, automatically.
It’s a perfect solution for people who don’t want to bother with lines at the register and those who just don’t want human interaction. While this is a neat idea, the tech behind it will still need to be refined before anyone can start shopping.
