All the Apple iPhone 16 series smartphones will pack 8GB RAM. A senior-level executive at Apple has officially confirmed that all four models will have the increased RAM sizes.

Apple increases RAM size in all iPhone 16 devices

Apple rarely, if ever, openly confirms the internal hardware specifications such as RAM and battery size of their iPhones. These devices have to be probed and analyzed to check their capabilities.

However, in a surprising twist, Apple has reportedly confirmed that all four models of the upcoming iPhone 16 will come equipped with 8GB of RAM. Johny Srouji, Apple’s Senior Vice President of Hardware and Technologies revealed the RAM size when he mentioned, “Apple meticulously analyzes data to determine the hardware requirements for specific features.”

It is interesting to note that Srouji categorically mentioned all iPhone 16 series devices. In other words, apart from the iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and the iPhone 16 Pro Max, even the entry-level iPhone 16 will be packing 8GB of RAM.

Needless to say, this is a major upgrade for the standard iPhone 16 model, as the iPhone 15 features 6GB RAM. Srouji revealed this critical information while mentioning the need to upgrade RAM sizes.

Apple Intelligence needs additional RAM to function reliably

Srouji mentioned that Apple needed to upgrade the RAM size for Apple Intelligence. In other words, he implied that Apple’s version of AI may have hurt the iPhone’s performance if RAM wasn’t increased.

“We have lots of data that tells us what is going to enable a certain feature, and Apple Intelligence is one of those very, very important features that we want to enable. And we look at different configurations, both for computation and memory bandwidth and memory capacity. And then we make the right trade-off and balance what makes the most sense. So, Apple Intelligence was a major feature that led us to believe that we need to get to 8GB.”

Apple’s version of Generative Artificial Intelligence (Gen AI) is a suite of products. While most of the AI features will arrive in the stable version of the iOS 18.1 update, some of the features may need a paid subscription.

Gen AI needs a dedicated amount of RAM to stay functional and respond quickly. No wonder even Google’s latest Pixel series smartphones need to reserve some RAM for Gemini.
