As many of you know by now, Google lost a huge antitrust trial in the US. The Department of Justice (DOJ) is planning to instruct Google on how to make amends. The outline is coming by December, that’s when Google will find out what to do regarding its search monopoly.
Following Google’s defeat in search monopoly hearing, an outline for changes is coming by December
This information is coming from Reuters. Along with this statement, we did not find out what remedies will be included, not at all. We did not find a single detail regarding those remedies, we’ll have to wait until December.
The Justice Department attorney, David Dahlquist, did say that the remedies will be comprehensive. They will also take into account how Google plans to integrate artificial intelligence into search, it was said.
What is expected is that prosecutors request Google to divest certain business units. That could include Google’s Android OS unit. The company could also be requested to stop paying billions of dollars to smartphone OEMs to keep its search engine as default on their devices.
Google requires a detailed proposal regarding remedies
Google’s attorney, John Schmidtlein, said that Google needs a detailed proposal from prosecutors. He was quite clear about that, as Google will need to adhere to those demands to the best of its ability.
What Google also said, again, is that it plans to appeal the ruling in this search monopoly case. On the flip side, the US District Judge, Amit Mehta, who was the judge in that case, said that he could hold a hearing in the sprint (in regards to that appeal). He also said that a ruling could be delivered by next August.
If you thought this case was over, well, we’re far from it. The DoJ needs to deliver a list of remedies, but despite that, Google will certainly appeal the original ruling. It remains to be seen how will that affect the original ruling, and will Google be able to minimize the impact.
