Netflix has officially announced that it will be the home to Adam Sandler’s upcoming Happy Gilmore sequel, which is in the works as we speak. Sandler will reprise his role from the original 1996 movie.
The first rumblings of a Happy Gilmore sequel were back in March of this year when actor Christopher McDonald revealed on in an interview on Audacy’s 92.3 The Fan, that Adam Sandler showed him the script for the new movie:
“I saw Adam about two weeks ago, and he says to me, ‘McDonald, you’re gonna love this,’ I said, ‘What?’ He says, ‘How about that?’ and he shows me the first draft of Happy Gilmore 2. He did show me that [script], and I thought, ‘Well, that would be awesome.’ So, it’s in the works. Fans demand it, dammit!”
Sandler himself commented on the movie later on the Dan Patrick Show:
“We’re working on it. Me and Hurley, he are diligently trying to make a good reason for everyone to come and I mean, to watch and have a good time. Netflix is excited about it.We have a million ideas already. We just, we just got to make it a movie and make sure we’re excited about people, uh, you know, enjoying it. It’s, it’s important. It’s important. We love happy Gilmore. We don’t want to let anybody down.”
Despite Sandler’s comments, Netflix didn’t officially confirm the Happy Gilmore sequel until May 15, 2024, when they revealed this along with many other news items during their Netflix Upfront event.
The movie will be produced by Adam Sandler’s Happy Madison production company, which has a major deal with the streamer and has already produced many projects, including Spaceman, Hustle, and many more.
As Happy Gilmore 2 is still in early development, there is no talk of any release dates, but if it starts production this year, perhaps late 2025 or 2026 would be on the table.
As for the cast, Sandler will naturally reprise his role, but there is yet to be any official information regarding who may or may not return from the 1996 original.
