Independence Day (1996), one of Will Smith‘s most popular movies, has hit No. 1 on Hulu this week after flirting with the top spot on the streaming platform for the past few weeks, according to FlixPatrol.
In July, Independence Day has ranked sixth among movies on Hulu, but the film entered the top five consistently over the past week. The film finally shot up to the top on July 14, which is where it stays today. But it should not come as too much of a surprise that the film is at or near the top in July, considering the film recently celebrated its 25th anniversary and is centered around American Independence Day.
The movie, which did have a poorly-received sequel 20 years later, Independence Day: Resurgence, stars Smith, Jeff Goldblum, Bill Pullman, Vivica A. Fox, and Randy Quaid, among others. Smith, who played Captain Steven Hiller, a Marine pilot, teamed up with Goldblum, a satellite engineer, to stop an alien invasion after the aliens simultaneously attack some of the largest cities in the world, killing millions of humans in the process. As one might expect, Smith and Goldblum are victorious in destroying the aliens and saving Earth on July 4.
On Hulu, Independence Day is ahead of the likes of Monster Hunter, Summer of Soul, The Croods: A New Age, and Safer at Home, which comprise the top five movies worldwide on the platform this week. For the month, Monster Hunter is No. 1, while a Hulu original, False Positive, is second.
To watch Will Smith‘s Independence Day on Hulu, you will need to purchase (or get a free trial for) the HBO Max Add-On on the service.
