The Last of Us is a fan-favorite series on the PlayStation platform, and it’s reportedly getting yet another version in the form of a physical special edition. Developer Naughty Dog has been behind several popular game titles for the PlayStation platform over the years, including Uncharted. However, The Last of Us is arguably the studio’s most beloved franchise, and that’s likely why the games in it have been re-released more than once.
Much like Bethesda has released quite a few versions of Skyrim, The Last of Us has seen several releases dating back to the original on PS3. It then received a remastered version for PS4, and then another version for PS5 with updated visuals. There’s also The Last of Us Part 2, which has gotten a remastered version for PS5 as well, and will soon be getting a PC release, as the game will launch on Steam on April 3.
That’s quite a few copies across several platforms, but there appears to be at least one more coming. Mind you, this is all while Naughty Dog is currently working on its next game. Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. This was revealed during The Game Awards back in December of 2024.
The Last of Us physical special edition may be released within two months
The rumor about this new special edition of the game comes from Billbil-Kun over at Dealabs (via Eurogamer and Techradar), who estimates that the game could be coming to PS5 sometime soon. According to Dealabs’ report, this special edition may launch sometime within two months.
That’s relatively soon. Considering the remastered version of the second game in the franchise drops this week. Billbil-Kun also states that the game could end up costing around $109.99 here in the US. It’s not clear if this special edition will come with one game or both games. But Techradar believes it may be a bundle that contains both. Based on the rumored pricing, that seems reasonable. As $109.99 seems like quite a lot for one game.
If this version does contain both games, it may also be the remastered versions of each one. Another detail that makes sense now that both of those are out on PS5.
Could this edition include a steelbook case?
At the rumored price, and the belief that it may be a bundle, a steelbook case seems like another reasonable possibility. Maybe it’s just me, but for the rumored price, a steelbook case would make this more special. More so than simply having both games bundled together. Of course, this might be just my hope as someone who only owns the original remastered version from the PS4.
Either way, if a new special edition is coming, it doesn’t appear to be too far out.
