Google is adding a native translation tool to the Gmail mobile apps for Android and iOS. It lets you quickly translate emails from a foreign language to your preferred language. The feature has been available on the web for a long time.

Once available for you, Gmail will show a dismissable “Translate” banner above the email body if the email is in a foreign language. It notes your preferred language, which is the “Google.com Mail display language” in your account settings. Clicking the banner will translate the message to that language. You can change the outfit language from the Settings gear that appears after you hit the translate button.

As expected, Gmail automatically detects the original language. You can see the original version and quickly switch between it and the translated version. Gmail also lets you automatically translate all future emails from that language. You have the option to never translate a specific language as well. You can do that by accepting the prompt that appears when you dismiss the banner or from the translation settings menu.

Note that dismissing the banner won’t stop it from appearing again for the same language unless you accept the aforementioned banner to never translate that language. Even in the latter case, you have the option to manually translate an email from the three-dot menu that appears in the top-right corner of the screen.

Gmail mobile apps finally have a native translation tool

According to Google, a native translation tool in Gmail mobile apps has been a “highly-requested feature.” Users had to previously open emails on the desktop web to read messages in a foreign language, copy-paste the content on Google Translate, or take a screenshot on mobile and translate it using Google Lens or Translate.

Google says this translation tool supports “a wide range of languages.” It is likely the same Google Translate-powered tool found on the web version, which lets you translate emails across more than 100 languages. There’s no admin control for this feature, so it will be available to all eligible users as soon as it’s rolled out.

Speaking of eligibility, all Google Workspace customers and users with personal Google Accounts will get the new native translation tool in Gmail for Android and iOS. The rollout for Android users (both Rapid and Scheduled Release domains) began Tuesday, August 8. Google expects to push the feature to everyone around the world in a couple of weeks. The rollout for iOUS users will begin on Monday, August 21.
