Elon didn’t get clearance to put up the X sign at Twitter HQ

It seems that just about every move that Elon Musk makes regarding Twitter, or X, brings more controversy. Recently, he erected an X sign on the top of Twitter HQ in San Francisco, and it looks like he didn’t have permission to do so.

The fact that he changed the name of the company was surprising enough. Shortly after getting the news that he was planning on doing it, users started seeing a new icon on their phones and a slew of memes mocking this change. Now, it’s about as solid as it could get with a new sign being raised over the building.

In typical Elon fashion, this change causes more harm than good, as it’s extremely bright. It bathes the building across the street in bright light at night. There are videos showing how much of a nuisance this sign is, especially after sundown. The sign isn’t only bright, but it flashes rapidly at points. This means that people with photo-sensitive conditions like epilepsy are at risk.

The flashing lights are a problem, but they’re not why Elon Musk is in hot water. According to Phone Arena, the city of San Francisco is investigating the billionaire over the sign. If you want to raise a sign like that, you need to get permission from the city. Surprising no one (because of how quickly it was put up and because, well, this is Elon Musk we’re talking about), Elon didn’t get the proper permission to raise the X sign.

If someone puts up a sign, it needs to be consistent with the historic nature of the building, according to the Department of Building Inspection spokesperson Patrick Hannan. So, we’re not sure if Elon will be required to take the sign down after the inspection.

This isn’t the only time this building project ran into trouble with the law. When the Twitter sign was being removed, the cops shut down the operation. The team failed to tape off the location so that people won’t get hurt in the case of an accident.
