Just days away from the premiere of Haunted Mansion, Walt Disney Studios has released a brand-new trailer for the supernatural horror-comedy film. Based on the popular theme park attraction, that dates back to 1969, Haunted Mansion stars Rosario Dawson and Chase Dillon, as Gabbie and Travis, a mother and her 9-year-old son who relocate to a mansion in New Orleans. The affordably priced abode, unfortunately, is also home to 999 haunts.
As the new trailer shows, Gabbie enlists the help of a local priest, played by Owen Wilson, who proclaims that it’s “time to assemble the dream team.” That dream team consists of a widowed scientist-turned failed-paranormal expert (LaKeith Stanfield), a French Quarter psychic (Tiffany Haddish), and a historian (Danny DeVito). The trailer, which you can watch below, teases that “mystery lurks around every corner” and reveals that if the paranormal “dream team” does not succeed in their quest, they’re stuck for eternity.
The recently dropped trailer also gives viewers a closer look at some of the film’s other notable cast members. Jamie Lee Curtis appears as Madame Leota (by way of a crystal ball), Hasan Minhaj portrays a talented sketch artist, and an unrecognizable Jared Leto appears as the creepy Hatbox Ghost. Dan Levy and Winona Ryder are also introduced in the trailer, but who the two portray remains unknown. Devoted fans of Ryder have wanted to sneak a peak of the actress in the film in hopes of figuring out who she is portraying.
Haunted Mansion is directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People) from a screenplay by Katie Dippold (Ghostbusters). The film is produced by Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, with Nick Reynolds and Tom Peitzman serving as executive producers.
Haunted Mansion Cast Skips Premiere
Haunted Mansion held its world premiere on Saturday at California’s Disneyland (the original home of the Haunted Mansion attraction), but due to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike, the film’s cast was not in attendance. Instead, Disney Park characters, including Mickey and Minnie Mouse, Maleficent and Cruella De Vill, walked the red carpet.
Director Simien did attend the premiere, and although press was notified that he would not be participating in any interviews, he did speak with The Hollywood Reporter about attending the event, saying: “I feel very ambivalent about it, but at the same time, I’m just so proud of this cast and I’m so, so proud of Katie Dippold who wrote the script, and so much of why I did this was to honor her words and to honor their work. If they can’t be here to speak for it, I felt like I had to be here to speak for it.It’s sad that they’re not here, at the same time, I totally support the reason why they’re not here. And I’m happy to be the one to ring the bell in their stead.”
Early reactions to Haunted Mansion have been overwhelmingly positive, with the movie being called “a surprisingly emotional comedy-horror movie for the whole family.” Haunted Mansion hits theaters July 28.
