As a whole, horror might be in the midst of a resurgence that matches any hot streak the genre has ever been on, but decent werewolf movies somehow remain few and far between. That being said, we did get a doozy not too long ago, even if The Cursed came and went without barely making a splash.
Writer and director Sean Ellis certainly swings for the fences when it comes to ambition, with the story unfolding in 19th Century France as Boyd Holbrook’s pathologist descends upon a rural community to dig into a string of bloody slaughters that have left the local townspeople traumatized.
There’s an enigmatic figure caught right in the center of the storm, too, but his missing son adds an extra wrinkle as the mangled corpses continue piling high. It’s most definitely a horror, but there are also elements of the mystery thriller and procedural at play, which all dovetailed nicely to ensure The Cursed was well-received by critics to the tune of a stellar 71 percent Rotten Tomatoes approval rating.
However, it yielded less than $5 million from the box office and didn’t capture the imagination as the best lycanthropic tales of terror tend to do, although it has finally been digging its claws into the streaming ranks two years after initially slipping straight through the cracks.
Per FlixPatrol, The Cursed has been howling at the moon on the worldwide watch-lists of both iTunes and Rakuten, because gorehounds will always be able to sniff out any film worth seeing that boasts bloods, guts, and dismemberment in such jarring volume.
