T-Mobile provides the best 5G experience in the US, wireless research firm Opensignal has determined. It has a far greater 5G coverage than AT&T and Verizon and also offers significantly faster download speeds. The carrier has topped these metrics for a long time now.

According to the new report, T-Mobile users are connected to a 5G network about 58 percent of the time. This is nearly three times more than the time AT&T users spend on 5G (20.7 percent) and nearly six times more than Verizon users (9.8 percent). T-Mobile has expanded its 5G coverage by over 17 percentage points over the past six months or so. That’s almost double what Verizon has done in its lifetime.

Coming to speed, T-Mobile once again achieves a clean sweep over its competition. Opensignal reports an average 5G download speed of 195.5Mbps on its network. This is more than two times faster than Verizon’s average speed of 96.3Mbps. AT&T comes last with a speed of about 80Mbps. All three operators have increased their 5G download speeds by similar margins over the past few months.

Of course, coverage and download speed aren’t the only metrics that define the best 5G experience for users. OpenSignal also evaluated the performance of the three major carriers across several other metrics. These include video streaming, live video, online gaming, voice calls over the internet, and upload speeds. It observed a similar experience on all three networks. Verizon marginally topped these metrics, with T-Mobile and AT&T following closely in that order.

T-Mobile leads the 5G coverage chart in every US state

Opensignal, which claims to be an “independent global standard for analyzing consumer mobile experience,” came up with this report after analyzing the 5G experience provided by T-Mobile, Verizon, and AT&T over 90 days between March 16 and June 13, 2023. The firm analyzed the 5G performance on these networks across every US state and the capital, Washington, D.C.

As you might expect, T-Mobile leads the coverage chart in every single region. It also leads the speed chart in most states, with Verizon slightly peaking in Montana and North Dakota. The two carriers also shared the top spot for the average 5G download speed in Wyoming. The three carriers deliver a comparable experience across other metrics in most states. AT&T hardly topped its two arch-rivals in any of those metrics, though. You can find the full Opensignal report on the national and regional 5G experience in the US here.
